The Ostufer Tiefwaren - Falkenhäger Bruch nature reserve is a 110 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer northeast of Waren and southeast of Neu Falkenhagen . The Tiefwarensee with its east and north banks forms the border of the protected area. It was placed under protection on February 12, 1990 in order to preserve the only known location of the liverwort Cryptothallus mirabilis . The area was expanded in 1994. In addition to the bank areas, the protected area includes an extensive section of the terminal moraine landscape with a valley moor, a fossilized steep bank and broken forest along the city moat.

The current state of the area is assessed as good, since a large part of the areas is developing undisturbed. In the past, forest harvesting had a disruptive effect.

A hiking trail with an ice age educational trail leads through the southern part of the reserve.

history

The protected area is embedded in a meltwater channel that was created during the Ice Age and extends into the Müritz from the north. Fluctuating lake levels led to the creation of the lake terrace in the south of the protected area. The Falkenhäger Bruch is crossed by the city moat, which drains towards Tiefwaren. From the 18th century the Falkenhäger Bruch was used as grassland until the 1960s. The Schmettausche map from 1788 still shows woody islands. After the end of use, trees and shrubs spread, so that currently only 10 percent of the protected area is free of trees.

Flora and fauna

Quarry forests are typical of the nature reserve. Formative species are birch , buckthorn , pine , marsh marigold and pipegrass . The very rare liverwort Crypthophyllus mirabilis occurs under litter and moss covers. Beech forest with pearl grass , spring flat peas , forest bedstraw and forest fescue grows at higher elevations . The lake terrace is planted with hazel , which has scaly root and winter horsetail in the undergrowth .

The breeding birds in the area are the sparrowhawk and spotted rail , the puffy tit and bluethroat , the bittern , the crane , the common snipe , the black kite and the kingfisher .
