The Ziemenbachtal nature reserve is a 175 hectare nature reserve in the Mecklenburg Lake District ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ) one kilometer south-east of Hohenzieritz . The area covers the course of the Ziemenbach from Sandmühle to Prillwitz.

The state of the area is classified as good in the upper reaches to satisfactory in the lower reaches. Nutrient inputs from neighboring agricultural areas, bog drainage and herbs have a detrimental effect on sensitive species such as the brook lamprey . Part of the area is owned by the Foundation for Environment and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The nature reserve can be accessed in several ways.

Together with the Ziemenbachtal nature reserve, the surrounding nature reserves Nonnenbachtal , Hellberge , Nonnenhof and Rosenholz and Zippelower Bachtal form a representative section of the landscape of the upper Tollensebecken.

history

The Ziemenbach is located at the southern end of the Ice Age Tollense Lobus of the Pomeranian main ice edge . In the Middle Ages it was used to operate two water mills near Hohenzieritz and Sandmühle. The mills can be recognized on the Schmettauschen map from 1780. Furthermore, grassland is shown on the map in the valley areas, while higher areas, which are today covered with forest, are shown as arable land. The mill operation was stopped in the 1950s. During the GDR era, the surrounding grasslands were used intensively. Drainage of the moors as well as the construction of a pumping station accelerated these efforts.

An alder - carr and wet meadows are found in the area. Typical plants are foam herbs , sedges , cotton grass , pipe grass , devil's bite , caraway silage , small valerian and reeds .
