Keetzseen nature reserve

The Keetzseen nature reserve is a 330 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania three kilometers south of the village of Fürstensee . It includes the large and small Keetzsee as well as the surrounding areas with other small bodies of water, such as the Buttersee , the Mummelsee and the Drei Pöhler. The expulsion took place on March 2, 1972 and initially only included the Mummelsee near Drewin. The area was expanded in 1994. The federal highway 96 forms the western border.

The purpose of the protection is to preserve a forest and lake area rich in structures with rare animal and plant species.

The nature reserve is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park and is classified as an FFH area under EU law .

The current state of the area is considered to be good. The construction of dams in 1994 had a positive effect on the water balance.

A hiking trail crosses the area, starting on federal highway 96 near Drewin.

History and water balance

The Vistula Ice Age led to terminal moraine embankments six kilometers to the north. The nature reserve is located in one of the sand areas in front of the terminal moraine , in which dunes were blown, melt water flowed off and dead ice forms remained. The two Keetz lakes are channel lakes through which the groundwater flows. The areas in the area were used for agriculture until the 19th century. From the 1850s onwards, the lakes that had previously had no outflow were connected to one another. As a result, the groundwater level fell by one meter and areas higher up could be reforested. The northern part of today's protected area was a restricted military area from 1930. The explosion of the Fürstensee ammunition plant in 1945 led to a forest fire. The forests are currently being used for forestry purposes. Fishing takes place in the two Keetz lakes.

Flora and fauna

Rare chandelier algae ground lawns can be found in the two Keetzseen, as well as Mittleres Nixkraut and Tausendblatt . The moor lakes have floating covers with peat moss . Osprey , crane , marsh harrier , bittern , red and black kite , black woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker occur. The otter lives in the area. Numerous species of dragonflies have been identified, including the green moss damsel , the eastern moss damsel and the great moss damsel .
