The Kulowseen nature reserve is a 235 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer southeast of the village of Fürstensee . It includes the large and small Kulowsee lakes and the surrounding areas. He was expelled on September 27, 1994.

The purpose of the protection is to preserve a richly structured forest, lake and moor area.

The nature reserve is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park and is classified as an FFH area under EU law .

The current state of the area is only considered to be satisfactory, as the consequences of the intensive carp farming in GDR times still had a negative impact on both lakes.

A hiking trail runs along the western border of the protected area. Further insights are possible from the country road running north from Fürstensee to Wokuhl.

History and water balance

The nature reserve is located in a sand area in front of the terminal moraine , which was created in the last ice age . The two Kulow lakes go back to dead ice forms . The Great Kulowsee has naturally strong water level fluctuations. The surrounding areas have been used for agriculture since the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, the groundwater was lowered with the aim of reforesting mineral sites. The shallow lakes offered ideal conditions for intensive fish farming. From the end of the 1970s, Amur carp were introduced into the lakes with this aim , which had a very negative effect on the originally mesotrophic lakes. Most of the carp died in the lake in 1991. Currently only a few carp are caught.

Flora and fauna

The original chandelier algae can hardly be found in both lakes due to the high nutrient load. Pond and water lilies take their place. When the water level is low, extensive stretches of shore form on the east bank, which are populated by Kleinseggen and rushes . Bog forests with birch , pine and the rare swamp porst characterize the area around the Kleiner Kulowsee, which is adjoined by a boiler bog to the west . Quarry forests with alders can be found north of the Great Kulow Lake. There is also a Kesselmoor to the west of the Great Kulowsee.

Sea and osprey , crane , bittern , red and black kite as well as the black woodpecker can be observed. Little ringed plovers breed on the dry beach banks. Otters live in this area.
