The Ostpeene nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania south of Malchin , which was placed under protection on March 30, 1989 and expanded in 1997. It includes a section of the East Peene , which runs through a wooded valley between Peenhäuser and Pinnow. Meadows in the valley edge areas serve as cattle pastures. The condition of the area is assessed as good, with nutrient inputs from neighboring agricultural areas leading to impairments. The forest areas are used for forestry without restriction. The scenic area can be accessed on a hiking trail.

history

The Ostpeene was created as an erosion valley in the last ice age. It cut up to 20 meters into the surrounding ground moraine . Groundwater layers were exposed and emerge as spring areas. Due to its steep gradient, the Ostpeene has been used by water mills since the Middle Ages. A memorial plaque reminds of a former water mill in the middle of the protected area. Another mill exists downstream at Peenhäuser. Land originally used for arable farming fell fallow in the Thirty Years War and was forested in the period that followed. The original vault bakers are still recognizable. The current forest distribution already exists on Wiebeking's map from 1786.

Flora and fauna

The main tree species in the area are common beech , black alder and ash . Wood anemones , liverworts and meadow primrose bloom in spring . The humid grasslands are home to rare species such as globe flower and broad-leaved orchid . Breeding birds are kingfisher , gray wagtail and dipper . Ten species of fish were found in the Eastern Peene, including chub , gudgeon , loach and grayling . The resettlement of brown trout was successful after releasing individual animals. The common toad as well as the moor , grass and tree frog occur. The otter lives in the area.
