Hellmuth Muntschick (born November 11, 1910 in Radeburg , † November 2, 1943 fallen in the Soviet Union ) was a German woodcut artist and painter. In his expressionist work he brings his evangelical faith together with ideas of mysticism .

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1930, Muntschick began studying at the art academies in Dresden , Vienna and Leipzig , which he completed with the state examination for higher education. He was a substitute teacher at various trade schools and was not given a permanent job because of his distant attitude towards National Socialism . In 1938 he married, in 1940 he was called up for military service and served on the fronts in France and Russia .

Muntschick is known for several woodcut cycles on the Passion of Jesus Christ , which he made during the Second World War as a Wehrmacht soldier , partly in an armored train , under great external pressure and - as an opponent of National Socialism and Christian pacifist - in emotional distress.

After his death, his work was summarized, documented and published by Gerhart Kegel. Most of the work is now, after a donation from the West Lusatian town of Bischofswerda , which until then had administered the estate, in the Kamenz town archive , where Muntschick lived until he was drafted into the military. Some pictures from this archive are exhibited in the Kamenz town hall . In the Protestant church in Jonsdorf , the gallery fields are provided with woodcuts by Muntschick (“Jonsdorfer Passion”) .

Hellmuth-Muntschick-Straße in Bischofswerda is named after the artist.
