The Sparkasse Baden based in Baden is an association savings bank , whose profits are allocated to the reserves and are thus of deposit insurance and the formation of capital. It is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks and the Austrian savings banks association . The business activities of Sparkasse Baden are subject to ongoing supervision by the State Commissioner and the Financial Market Authority .

Foundation and history

The idea of founding the Sparkasse Baden came from a group of people from the agricultural district association with a Christian-social mindset, who on the one hand recognized the great need for funding of the agricultural population and on the other hand recognized the need for self-help and provision for medium- sized businesses . The farmers needed loans in order to take advantage of the basic exemption that arose after 1848. The entire middle class had no opportunity to do banking in Baden. On October 13, 1868, the founding meeting took place with the election of the bodies, so that the Sparkasse Baden could start operations on December 29, 1868. From the opening year, however, a partly artificially generated boom set in. This ended in the stock market crash of 1873 and cost many people, including the middle class, their entire wealth. Many banks that were founded primarily for speculative purposes also lost their existence. That was the first practical test of the young savings bank, which, based on its statutes, was only allowed to use its customers' money for secure purposes, namely for mortgage-backed loans and for the purchase of government bonds. Their savers did not lose a guilder.

As of January 1, 2011, Sparkasse Kirchschlag AG was merged with Sparkasse Baden. The technical merger took place on June 17, 2011. (The balance sheet total of Sparkasse Kirchschlag AG amounted to EUR 175.8 million as of December 31, 2010, that is 20 percent of the balance sheet total of Sparkasse Baden.)

Charitable Activities

Since it was founded in 1868, the Sparkasse Baden has endeavored to support municipal projects. More than 7.5 million euros have been donated to the region over the course of 140 years. The Sparkasse Baden supports almost all areas, for example the operation of the Baden city bus or the renovation and annual donations to support the ongoing performances of the Baden City Theater . It also sponsored the construction of the Roman thermal baths.
