The nature reserve Birkbuschwiesen is a 130 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania four kilometers north of Neubrandenburg . It is in the Tollensetal. The Tollense forms the western border of the protected area. It was placed under protection on March 22, 1971 with the aim of protecting and developing a typical Mecklenburg valley moor with rare animal and plant species.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory because the water balance of the areas is disturbed by lowering the groundwater. There is intensively used grassland in the surrounding area.

The nature reserve is part of the FFH area Tollensetal with tributaries .

An old farm road allows entering the area from the west.

history

The protected area is embedded in the Tollensetal, an Elsterzeit channel that was last shaped by the glacier tongues of the Pomeranian stage of the Vistula glaciation . After the Ice Age, mighty fens of the flow-through bog type developed here , which are characterized by the limestone muds of a former shallow lake. 200 years ago most of the Birkbusch meadows were free from forests.

Flora and fauna

A swamp forest of downy birch and buckthorn occupies a large part of the reserve. Pipe grass with the very rare flour primrose can be found on the scattered meadow areas . Breeding birds in the area are oriole , red kite , goshawk , yellow mockers , blackcap . Beavers , otters and dormice are representatives of the mammals.
