Rühlower Os nature reserve

The Rühlower Os nature reserve is a 24 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 10 kilometers east of Neubrandenburg . The eponymous place Rühlow is located one kilometer to the east. The protected status was made on 10 February 1971, two expansions in 1975 and 1997. The reserve includes a glacially formed Oszug with a Osauge. The areas are an important habitat for numerous amphibian species.

The current state of the area is assessed as good. Grazing and mechanical maintenance measures ensure that partial areas with poor grass are kept open.

The area can be reached on foot via a driveway. There is a sign on the road between Warlin and Rühlow.

history

The one kilometer long and up to 250 meter wide Oszug was formed in the last Ice Age, probably as a result of the melting of an extensive block of dead ice that fell into a crevasse. In the north of the protected area there is a small lake, which has the shape of an amphitheater with the adjacent sloping bank. The areas of the Oszug have been grazed with sheep since the Middle Ages. Lean lawns formed, whereby the non-native Upright Trespe was introduced by humans. In 1867 the Oszug was divided by the Bützow – Szczecin line. During the GDR era, grazing was abandoned and sand was mined in the central part of the protected area. Maintenance measures from 1996 led to the clearing of the bushy areas. Partial areas are currently being grazed.

Flora and fauna

Lean grasslands can be found especially in the southern part of the protected area. Typical species are upright bristle, Saat-Esparsette , meadow sage , crack strawberry , small meadow button , peach-leaved bellflower , rough violet and common meadow silage . The abandoned areas are planted with trees such as dog rose , hawthorn and hazel . An important amphibian breeding place for common toad , newt , crested newt , fire-bellied toad , spadefoot , natterjack toad , green toad and deciduous , moor , grass and edible frog is in the reserve.
