The nature reserve Kalk-Zwischenmoor Wendischhagen is a 59 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which was designated on August 16, 1994. It is located west of Malchin on the north bank of the Malchiner See and is part of the Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Kummerower See nature park . The eponymous place Wendischhagen is not far to the west.

The protection goal consists in the maintenance and care of a bog complex that is fed by calcareous water or grows on calcareous subsoil - the former lake bed. As a result of the construction of the Dahmer Canal in the 1870s, the lake level dropped by 2 meters. Numerous rare plant species grow in the nature reserve. The state of the area is assessed as good, although regular mowing and grazing are necessary to achieve the protection goal. It is not possible to walk on the areas.

Flora and fauna

Reed and sedge meadows with marsh riding grass occupy a large part of the area in the south of the area. To the north are swamp forests. Breeding birds in the area are bluethroat , bearded tit , great reed warbler , sedge warbler , bittern , marsh harrier , Tüpfelralle and Gray Goose .
