The Lauenhagener See nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is five kilometers northwest of Strasburg (Uckermark) and covers 103 hectares. The areas were designated as a nature reserve on July 15, 1993.

A lake that was drained in the 1970s is to be naturally developed again through rewetting, since the areas were one of the most important wetlands in the district in the past.

The state of the area is rated as satisfactory. So far it has not been possible to set a permanent water level.

A path in the southern area allows insights into the area.

History and water balance

The areas were decisively shaped by the last icing phase. About two kilometers to the north is the Brohmer Mountains, a striking terminal moraine . The Lauenhagener See lies in an ice age runoff of the meltwater and goes back to a form of dead ice . In the following time a lake formed through which calcareous groundwater flowed. The lake silted up and a flow moor with up to two meters thick peat could develop. From 1780 the lake was dammed to operate a water mill. On Wiebeking's map from 1786, the lake is roughly the same size as it is today. The water level was artificially increased at the beginning of the 20th century to serve as a water reserve for a sugar factory . The lake, which originally had no outflow, was drained by the Strasburger Mühlbach in the direction of the Uecker . During the GDR era, the areas were ameliorated in the 1970s . Except for small remnants, the wetland was drained in order to promote the drainage of the adjacent fields and grassland areas. In the following years the lake often dried up in summer and willow trees settled. The large-scale peat extraction planned in the 1980s was not implemented. From 1991, the water level was raised by a dam. Currently a 4 hectare water area has been created.

Flora and fauna

The willow vegetation is still characteristic of the former lake bed. Here and there are extensive reeds. The flat quickly heated lake offers good living conditions for amphibians such as fire-bellied toad and grass , marsh , deciduous and water frog . Bird species that have disappeared with the drainage have settled again, including the black tern , bittern , spoonbill and teal , red-necked grebe and little grebe and the crane .
