The Buddenhagener Moor nature reserve is a 111 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer east of Buddenhagen . It was placed under protection on November 5, 1990. The protected area includes a forest and moor landscape, which, due to its remote location and lack of disturbance, represents a valuable habitat for rare species. It is part of an FFH area , which also places the areas under protection under EU law.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory because the water balance of the areas is disturbed. There is a lack of water in the bog, although the exact causes have not been clarified and may be due to the drainage of adjacent meadows or to the natural gas pipeline laid through the bog in the 1960s. The southern part of the protected area has been in private hands since 1998 and is being developed in accordance with nature conservation principles. In 2008 the areas on the Scheidegraben were renatured. The surrounding softwood crops were stocked with deciduous trees through a planting campaign. The remaining moor area in the nature reserve has more than doubled again after the dam measures and the pushing back of the pines.

Several public paths make it possible to enter the areas. Guided tours are offered regularly on site.

history

The protected area is embedded in a terminal moraine landscape - the ice edge of the Velgaster Staffel. Immediately to the west there is a sander that also covered the terminal moraine as the ice thawed. There is little evidence that the areas were used in the past. Individual peat cuttings were made by the local population. Today parts of the protected area are used intensively for forestry.

Flora and fauna

In the shallow peat cuttings of the kettle bogs , there are still peat moss lawns with cotton grass , sundew , sedges , rushes , beak reeds, swamp porst, as well as birches and pines . Noteworthy bird species in the area are crane , middle woodpecker , pied flycatcher and crossbill .
