Karlsburger and Oldenburger Holz nature reserve

The nature reserve Karlsburger and Oldenburger Holz is a 422  hectare nature reserve in the communities and Karlsburg , Züssow and Ranzin in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

location

High moor

The protected area comprises a structured forest area with historical forms of forest use, damp depressions and grassland areas. It consists - from west to east - of three sub-areas: an open land area southwest of Oldenburg (a district of Züssow), the southern part of the Oldenburg wood around the Ulanenberg and the south-eastern part of the Karlsburger wood, left and right of the federal road 109 . Within the areas there is a difference in height of 15 to 30 meters above sea level . The Karlsburger and Oldenburger wood belong to the landscape unit of clay panels north of the Peene , which bears the order number 200.

History and geology

The areas emerged as a ground moraine landscape during the Vistula glacial period . From this time a boulder clay cover has been preserved in the southern edge area due to superficial weathering of the calcareous boulder clay . The glacier was thawing towards the east at this time, leaving behind large areas that were shaped by meltwater . By reversing the relief , the mountain ranges with an Os character that were still present in the 21st century were created . This characteristic can be seen, for example, west of the Ulanenberg as a narrow continuation of the elevation. The melting water left a large, extensive sedimentation of sands. In this manner, low mighty formed limnic-fluvatile sands out that at a later date by the Vermoorung partly with peat and peat were covered.

The areas around the Karlsburger and Oldenburger Holz were used for many centuries as a middle and coppice forest . In the muddy depressions old stocks of a hut forest are growing . This management was discontinued around 1820. In the first half of the 19th century, experts reforested some of these hats with conifers . They used the existing depressions to drain the area into the Swinow . The green areas were used as standing pastures until they were placed under protection on November 16, 1978 . In the 21st century they serve as mowing grassland . The protected area was extended with effect from September 20, 1984. The protection purpose is the "preservation of a richly structured deciduous forest area with historical forest forms, moored depressions and adjacent moist green forest areas as the habitat of the spotted eagle ". The Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) has been taking care of most of the area since 2004 .

fauna and Flora

The protected area is the habitat of the lesser spotted eagle, which is severely threatened. In addition, however that is red and black kite , the honey buzzard , the Green Sandpiper , the small and black woodpecker , the Warbler and the mourning and red-breasted flycatcher home. Six species of bat have been identified in the area. The beaver immigrated via the Swinow . He built the largest beaver castle in the district in the nature reserve.

From the historical use, there are still some pedunculate oaks , red beeches and hornbeam-rich stocks in the nature reserve , some of which are several hundred years old, especially on the mineral soils . Larger areas are overgrown with larch , spruce and Douglas fir , which were reforested on former hatchery areas. The sedge giant and the gray willow grow in wet, closed depressions . Larger areas are overgrown with alder forests and the swamp iris , reeds and reed grass . On the southern edge, old Hudewald forms with pedunculate oaks and red beeches have been preserved. The meadow crested grass and red fescue lawn grow here . The hawthorn and hazel can be found in the understory .

State of the area and development

The state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory, as the water balance of the moored depressions is disturbed by drainage and numerous non-local tree species have been planted in the area. The aim is to increase the proportion of hardwood by taking back softwood. Furthermore, some areas are to be decoupled from drainage. NABU is also planning to rewet drained forest moors and wet meadows and thus introduce a typical range of species.

Public use

Several paths lead through the area. From 1975 onwards they were signposted by Horst Zilm together with patients from the Diabetes Institute Karlsburg . A hiking trail is marked with a green bar on a white background and leads through the middle nature reserve. In its northern part is the Siebrechtsweg , which is named after the forest worker Dieter Siebrecht . He died on February 19, 1998 in a logging in the forest. In his honor, the community planted the 1998 tree of the year, a wild pear, at the accident site and put up a memorial plaque there. In a westerly direction there is an almost complete row of trees with the trees from 1990 to 2008. Behind the crossing of a depression known as the Owl Bridge begins a nature trail with display boards of the typical communities in the raised bog. There is also a duel stone in the area with the inscription F. v. H. 4. 8. 1846 . The historical background could not yet be examined in detail. Experts suspect that it is reminiscent of the landlord Friedrich von Homeyer, whose Ranzin estate was near the nature reserve. The vast majority of the paths lead to a central place, the so-called spider.
