The Kieshofer Moor nature reserve is a nature reserve in the area of the municipality of Wackerow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located in a forest four kilometers north of Greifswald . The eponymous town of Groß Kieshof is not far to the west. The nature reserve was designated on March 3, 1938 with a size of 30 hectares. The protection purpose consists in the preservation of a rewetted Sauer-Zwischenmoor, which also serves as a teaching and research object of the University of Greifswald .

The current state of the area is classified as good and the nature reserve Kieshofer Moor is considered a successful example of moor renaturation. The Lamarck Circle of the University of Greifswald takes on the care of the protected area and carries out maintenance measures, such as the removal of regrowing trees.

History and water balance

The Kieshofer Moor was created as a 10 meter deep dead ice hole at the end of the last ice age . The thawing ice created a kettle lake, which silted up in the following millennia and mossed up to the kettle bog stage. Since the area boundary for purely rainwater-fed moors is 620 mm of annual precipitation, no pure rainmoor could develop. In the north-west of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the annual rainfall is higher, so that 20 rain bogs can be found there. The history of the development of the moor can still be documented today by drilling through the sequence of clay, liver and peat mud . The peat layer reached a thickness of up to seven meters. The inside of the Kesselmoor was free of wood. what is still documented on the Swedish matriculation card . From 1823 peat was extracted from the moor. The drainage required for this led to lowering of the groundwater level and the immigration of woody plants. A ditch still leads east to the Greifswalder Bodden . The moor was wooded. Only when the trench was closed and the water level was raised from 1988 onwards and pine trees were removed, this process could slowly be reversed. Up until now, access was via a wooden walkway that was accessible via the B 105 . It was rotten in 2014, so the nature reserve cannot be entered at the moment.

Flora and fauna

Alder quarry forest in the edge area

The moor exhibits a strong nutrient gradient towards the center from euthrophic to oligotrophic. In the marginal area there is a eutrophic marginal swamp with large sedge , willow , reed and alder . In addition to the typical water feather , panicle sedge , cattail , rush and frog bite grow there . In very humid summers, the alder dies in places, so that an interplay of sedge (wet years) and alder (dry years) occurs. After rewetting, the original (oligotrophic) raised bog vegetation grows again in the center of the bog. There are cotton grass peat moss lawns with Scheidigem cotton grass , narrow-leaved cotton grass , swamp porst and cranberries . Breeding birds in the area are teal , sea eagle , crane , common snipe and wood sandpiper . In the spring, the deposits accumulate on grass , green and moor frog . 21 species of dragonflies have been identified in the area, including peat damsel , moon damsel , little damsel and big damsel, as well as the great dragonfly . The noctule hunt in the area.
