The lunar damsel ( Coenagrion lunulatum ) is a species of dragonfly from the family of the slender dragonflies (Coenagrionidae).

features

The lunar azure maiden reaches a wingspan of about 3.5 centimeters. The males have black and blue markings on the thorax and abdomen segments, which means that there is a risk of confusion with other azure maidens.

distribution and habitat

The lunar damsel lives mainly on nutrient-poor moor waters , less often in raised bogs , especially in Northern Europe, but rarely in the Alps .

Way of life

The flight time of these dragonflies falls from May to mid-June. The animals stay mainly in the bank vegetation, where mating also takes place and mating wheels can be found. The eggs are pricked by the female mainly into the submerged leaves of the cotton grass , while it is in tandem with the male. Both dive together and can stay under water for up to half an hour with the help of an air bubble enveloping the body. The larvae hide in floating parts of the plant.

Danger

The lunar azure maiden is listed as "severely endangered" in the red list (hazard class 2) due to the habitats that are disappearing due to drainage .
