Toussaint by Charpentier

Toussaint von Charpentier (born November 22, 1779 in Freiberg , † March 4, 1847 in Brieg ) was an important geologist and entomologist .

Charpentier was the son of the geologist and Saxon mining captain Johann Friedrich Wilhelm von Charpentier and the brother of Johann von Charpentier . He studied geology and mining at the Bergakademie Freiberg and continued his studies at the University of Leipzig .

In 1802 Charpentier went to Prussia , where he accepted a position at the Silesian Mining Authority in Breslau . In 1806 Charpentier took over the management of the Schweidnitz Mining Authority until he returned to the Upper Mining Authority in Breslau in 1811. In 1826 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1828 he was transferred to Dortmund as vice miner captain . In 1830 Charpentier was appointed mining captain of the regional mining authority in Dortmund. In 1836, in the same function, he took over the management of the Silesian Mining Authority, which had been relocated to Brieg since 1819 and remained there until his death.

Charpentier published numerous works on mining and geognostic topics, but also on his hobby , entomology . Here he was the editor of the new edition of the publications Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers The European Butterflies and The Foreign Butterflies , which appeared in Erlangen between 1829 and 1830 .
