The Burgwall Rothemühl nature reserve is a 44-hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania nine kilometers northeast of Strasburg (Uckermark) , immediately northeast of Rosenthal. It was placed under protection on October 10, 1963. The protected area includes the Rothemühl castle wall, which lies on a compression moraine , with surrounding beech forests and boiler moors. According to European law, the areas are part of an FFH and bird protection area .

history

The protected area lies in the area of the Rosenthaler Staffel, the main terminal moraine of the Mecklenburg advances of the Vistula glaciation . The wooded ridge stands out from the surrounding landscape.
In the area around the 125 m high Schanzenberg there is an early Slavic hill castle from the 7th century. It consisted of a small main castle and two larger outer castles, the walls of which are still well preserved today. The size of the castle complex is approx. 20 ha. It was the border castle of the Wilzen and could offer refuge to several thousand people in times of need. In the late Slavic period, the castle complex was no longer used.
Fragments found also show settlement activity on the area during the Younger Bronze Age .

A forest cover of the areas has been proven for the past centuries, as for example on the Schmettauschen map from the year 1780. Extensive forest interventions took place in the 1980s. Old trees were removed and areas broken up in places.

On the north slope of the castle wall there are linden trees and mountain elm , on the south slope there are isolated winter linden trees and sessile oak . A seven-hectare Kesselmoor is located in the northern part of the area, another with quarry forest in the northeast. Peat moss and round-leaved sundew are typical species, as well as cranberries and marsh cala .

The butterfly fauna in the area was examined and evidence of swallowtail , tree whitefly , reseda whitefly , quail wheat butterfly and blue billy goat was provided.
