The Grünzer Berge nature reserve is a nature reserve in the municipality of Penkuns in the south-east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located on the eastern slope of the Randow Valley and south of the federal motorway 11 in the Grünzer Mountains near the village of Grünz . The protected area was designated on September 27, 1990 and expanded in 1993. It covers an area of 30 hectares.

The protection goal consists in the maintenance and development of a richly structured valley slope with dry and semi-arid grassland, which is unique for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as well as border, perennial and spring meadows. Continental plant species find a western distribution point here.

The state of the area is classified as satisfactory, since abandonment of use and afforestation lead to a decline in lawn communities. According to EU law, the areas are classified as FFH areas . The owner is the Foundation for Environment and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

There are only a few public roads through the reserve. A paved path on the north-western edge of the areas allows views of the area.

History and water balance

The Grünzer Mountains emerged as part of a sandy terminal moraine in the last Ice Age . At the end of this, the meltwater built up in the area of the Randow Valley, which is only one kilometer wide, and broke through the ridge. Several burial mounds in the area attest to human habitation since the Stone Age . Livestock farming in the Randow Valley has been traceable since the funnel cup culture 6000 years ago. This grazing with sheep, goats and horses was preserved until the 20th century, so that an adapted flora was established. From the 1960s onwards, land use changed in some areas. Areas were afforested or plowed for arable use. From 1990 onwards there was no more grazing in the area, which led to heavy bush encroachment and thus displacement of the plants worth protecting.

Flora and fauna

The formative dry vegetation consists of plant communities with meadow oats , schiller grass and pinnate twinks . Due to the abandonment of use, trees such as hawthorn and ash migrate . The sand lizard is found in the area. Highlighting values birds are backed Shrike , Great Gray Shrike , Whinchat , Thrush and turtledove . Various butterflies have been detected in the bushes and on the dry and warm locations, including the Esparsette ram , the imperial coat , the admiral and the painted lady .
