The nature reserve Kronwald is a 114 hectare wide nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and performs the identification number 42. It is located in a designated as Drosedower forest forest five kilometers north of Demmin . The Krongraben forms the northern border. The designation took place on December 12, 1957 with the aim of preserving a mixed deciduous forest that is influenced by groundwater and backwater, which is typical for the plains of Western Pomerania .
The nature reserve is classified as a bird sanctuary and FFH area under EU law . It is being scientifically studied as a natural forest reserve.
The current state of the area is only considered to be satisfactory, as the water balance does not correspond to the natural conditions due to the lowering of the water level.
There are no public roads in the area. The street from Toitz-Rustow train station borders the areas to the south.
History and water balance
The areas of today's nature reserve are embedded in a flat glacial valley that formed during the last ice age . Forest cover has been typical of the area for centuries. Various maps, such as the Lubinsche map from 1618, the Swedish matriculation card from 1697 and the Schmettausche map from 1780 show deciduous forest cover with oak, beech, birch, alder and quivering poplar. The forest was managed as a middle and coppice forest. After the end of the Thirty Years War , the land became the property of the Kingdom of Sweden . After the end of the Second World War, extensive timber was removed as part of reparations deliveries . The proportion of waste wood is therefore currently low.
Flora and fauna
The main tree species in the nature reserve are red beech , ash and black alder . Broad-leaved bellflower , fox's orchid , greenish forest hyacinth and broad-leaved sitter grow in the herb layer . Alder fragments are scattered in the damp depressions.
Breeding birds are miniature flycatchers , treecreepers , mistletoe , willow tit , buzzard , red kite and spotted eagle . Amphibians are abundant, including moor and common frogs and grass snakes . The imperial mantle , the great schiller butterfly and the mother-of-pearl butterfly have been observed in butterfly species.
