Coordinates: 53 ° 57 ′ 35.7 " N , 14 ° 1 ′ 11.7" E
The peninsula Cosim nature reserve is an 85 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Insel Usedom nature park , one kilometer north of the village of Balm . It was placed under protection on November 5, 1990. It was reduced in size in 1996 and includes the Cosim peninsula with wet meadows, swamp forests and the surrounding shallow water areas of the backwater as an important breeding and resting area for coastal birds.
The current state of the area is assessed as very good, as the areas are remote and therefore with little disruption. However, its importance as a breeding area for shorebirds depends on grazing. A public path leads into the area.
history
The Cosim peninsula was created during the Littorina Transgression , i.e. at times of higher water levels, as a beach wall on a 13-meter-high cliff to the west. The areas were moored over the course of the following millennia. Agricultural use of the land is documented on the Swedish register card from the 17th century. The north and south hooks of the peninsula were used as a hay meadow until the 1960s. In the western part of the area peat was cut. With the start of intensive agriculture, grassland management was given up. Parts of the peninsula have only been grazed again since 1995.
Flora and fauna
The salt marsh vegetation bound to grazing can only be found sporadically. Reeds and swamp forests take their place. On the pasture grass to find Marsh Orchid , Eriophorum angustifolium , Avens and Saxifraga granulata . A ridge of sand in the central part of the protected area rises seven meters from the surrounding plains and is home to grasslands with wound clover , quaking grass , fescue , hawkweed , stonecrop and wormwood . The peat cut to the west now bears a forest with birch and willow. Due to the abandonment of the areas in places, the value for breeding birds has decreased. Rare shorebirds such as dunlins and black-tailed godwit appear only sporadically. In recent years, lapwing , oystercatcher , common snipe , gadfly , marsh harrier , bearded tit , chimney and shelduck have been identified as breeding birds.
