The Usedom Island Nature Park covers the German part of the Usedom Island in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania up to the Polish border. The nature park also includes the Achterwasser, the Peene stream, the northern part of the Stettiner Haff, the shallow water areas of the Baltic Sea at the Peene estuary, as well as a narrow strip of mainland on the west bank of the Peene stream from the seaside resort of Lubmin to the Lassaner Winkel with the port city of Lassan .

The oldest nature reserve in Pomerania was designated as early as 1925 at Peenemünder Haken in the north of the island. The Zerninsee near Swinoujscie followed in 1938. Between 1957 and 1971, other areas were placed under nature protection (e.g. Gothensee, Streckelsberg), the area of which covered around 2000 hectares. From 1990 to 1998 several valuable parts of the landscape were secured as nature reserves; the total area of all nature reserves is almost 5500 hectares today. Large parts of the island of Usedom were declared a landscape protection area as early as 1966 . In 1993 it was extended to the area of today's nature park.

The region was officially declared a nature park in the sense of a large-scale cultural landscape in December 1999. An information center, the Ruth-und-Klaus-Bahlsen-Haus, with exhibition rooms, the seat of the nature park administration and the city information center, is located in the historic station building on the Bäderstraße in Usedom (city) . The construction was funded as part of an INTERREG project and completed in 2005.

The total area of the nature park covers 632  km² . Approx. 25% of this area is forested, almost 50% are bodies of water, the remaining area is agricultural land and settlements. The once extensive fens are now almost completely drained and are used for agriculture. A special feature of the nature park is the high diversity of habitats in a small area. Here you can find the Baltic Sea beach and inland coast, cliffs and dunes, lakes and moors, alder quarries, dune pine and beech forests, meadows and fields, small villages and seaside resorts. The island of Usedom is one of the most bird-rich areas in Germany. White- tailed eagles , white storks , cranes and gray herons breed in the nature park . The eutrophic shallow lakes such as the Gothen and Schmollensee are ideal resting and breeding areas for the birds. The nature park can be easily reached via the federal road 110 from Anklam or the federal road 111 from Wolgast and with the Usedomer Bäderbahn . On the edge of the nature park you can find the municipality of Heringsdorf with the districts of Ahlbeck , Heringsdorf and Bansin .
