The Peenetal River Landscape Nature Park is a nature park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was founded on July 19, 2011 by a state ordinance. The seat of the nature park is in Stolpe .

The Peene Valley is considered to be the largest contiguous fen area in Central Europe. 156 bird and 37 fish species were counted there, which is why the Peene is said to be the most species-rich river in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

location

The nature park covers about 33,400 hectares of the Peene Valley from the outlet at the Kummerower See to the confluence with the Peene River and thus a large part of the areas of the large- scale nature conservation project Peene Metal Landscape. In the area there is a nature station and a support association for nature conservation issues.

The nature park borders on two other nature parks: in the west on the nature park Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Kummerower See as well as in the east on the nature park Insel Usedom , which ceded both areas to the new nature park so that the Peene valley lies completely in just one nature park.

The following nature reserves are located within the nature park - from west to east:

history

The areas of the nature park are located in the project area of the major nature conservation project Peenetallandschaft, which was managed by the association of the same name based in Anklam from 1992 to 2008. A funding volume of EUR 31 million was spent on purchasing space and adapting the use. After the end of the project, various options for legally securing the areas were discussed. The idea of creating a national park was abandoned in favor of securing it as a nature park. In June 2010, a network of tourism providers in the Peenetal landscape, consisting of boat rentals, hotels, nature and landscape guides and operators of rest areas, was awarded the European Tourism Prize Eden Award 2010.

In 2010 the question of what should be done with the areas of the Peenetal-Landschaft special purpose association and the areas in long-term extensification agreements was also clarified. The originally planned variant of the free transfer to the NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage was abandoned after local resistance in favor of a transfer of land to the water and soil associations. The association remains in place. Together with the farmers, the water and soil associations assume financial follow-up obligations, around EUR 100,000 annually, from the major nature conservation project.

A development team for the nature park began work on February 1, 2010 and set four priorities. In addition to nature conservation measures, environmentally friendly tourism, public relations and environmental education as well as the influence on sustainable regional development should be discussed. A steering group consisting of two representatives from the districts of Demmin and Ostvorpommern, a representative from the forest, agricultural, nature conservation and nature park administration supported the work in an advisory capacity. The annual costs of the nature park were estimated at 500,000 euros, with the districts and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wanting to participate.
