Large-scale conservation project
A major nature conservation project in Germany is a measure to “establish and secure parts of nature and landscape worthy of protection with national representative importance” ( BfN ), often abbreviated within the administration as GR areas .
With a corresponding program, the Federal Republic of Germany has been promoting landscapes since 1979 that have an influence on the ecosystem far beyond their surroundings. This is intended to protect the “national natural heritage” and meet supranational nature conservation obligations. The application for the implementation of a large-scale nature conservation project takes place via a competition organized by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation . The last call , called Idea.Natur , ran until May 20, 2009.
In 2008 the funding program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety was renamed "chance.natur - Federal Funding for Nature Conservation".
The project areas can already have a legal protection status, for example as a nature reserve or FFH area .
