The major nature conservation project, Mountain Meadows in the Eastern Ore Mountains, is the 50th project in Germany's “chance.natur - Federal Nature Conservation” funding program, which has existed since 1979.

The project sponsor is the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains in Saxony.

The aim of the project is the preservation of various open land biotopes in the Eastern Ore Mountains with their species-rich flora and fauna , especially montane, extensively used grassland with black grouse, through nature-friendly agriculture. The unique cultural landscape , which was created in the 500 years of cultivation of the Eastern Ore Mountains , includes mountain meadows , wet meadows , grass grass , moors and stone ridges .

Funding areas are the Geisingberg and the border meadows Fürstenau , which are located in the core zones of Altenberg (Geisingberg) and Fürstenau , including the edge zones Geising , Zinnwald-Georgenfeld , Rudolphsdorf , Cínovec , Fojtovice and Adolfov . Adjacent areas are Lauenstein , Löwenhain and Fürstenwalde . The following were classified as particularly worthy of protection:

The project was funded from 1999 to 2008 by

The total financial volume was 5.37 million euros, contributed to:

  • 75 % from the federal government
  • 20% from the state of Saxony
  • 5% from the Weißeritzkreis as sponsor with the city of Altenberg and the city of Geising

The second phase of the project began in December 2010 and is to run until August 2015. The project volume is 3.4 million euros, contributed to:

  • 65% from the federal government
  • 28% from the state of Saxony
  • 7% from the project sponsor (district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains, City of Altenberg, Association for the Promotion of Nature in the Eastern Ore Mountains)
