The large-scale nature conservation project Landscape of Industrial Culture North (LIK.Nord) in Saarland is one of the five winners of the "IDEE.Natur - Nature Conservation Future Prize" competition sponsored by the Federal Environment and Agriculture Ministry in 2009 a project in an urban-industrial region was included in this funding program.

Project description

Promoter

The project sponsor is the Zweckverband Landschaft der Industriekultur Nord. The founding members of the cities of Neunkirchen and Friedrichsthal , the municipalities of Illingen , Merchweiler , Schiffweiler and Qui Various and Industriekultur Saar GmbH (IKS) joined forces on June 15, 2009. The district of Neunkirchen joined as a further member in 2014 . The first managing director of the Zweckverband was Detlef Reinhard until October 2014, followed by Ulrich Heintz.

project goal

The aim of the project is to maintain and expand a representative mix of the diverse and sometimes very different habitats of the urban-industrial post-mining landscape of the Saarland and the biodiversity of this landscape and to make it tangible for people through targeted control.

Project area

The project area in central Saarland is a typical post-mining landscape: fragmented, densely populated and cut up by traffic routes. The landscape is characterized by a mosaic of specialized habitats. Old beech forests shape the landscape, as do mountain heaps , mud ponds and fallow industrial sites where specialized species such as green toad and yellow-bellied toad have settled. In total, there are almost 100 Red List species here. The core area has an area of 2,423 hectares and is located in the Saarland on the areas of the cities of Neunkirchen and Friedrichsthal, the municipalities of Illingen, Merchweiler, Schiffweiler and Quiigart. Natural areas are the Saar coal forest and the Prims-Blies hill country.

Funding period

Funding phase I: 2009–2012 (preparation of the maintenance and development plan )

Funding phase II: 2013–2024 (implementation of the measures)

Financial volume

Funding phase I: EUR 0.828 million

Funding phase II: 12.8 million euros

Landscape laboratories and core areas

Small bodies of water in the Weilerbachtal near pond no. 5 in the landscape laboratory post-mining landscape

Funding is focused on four topic-related landscape laboratories with their core areas. The individual measures are listed in the maintenance and development plan for the "Large Nature Conservation Project Landscape of Industrial Culture North".

Landscape laboratory post-mining landscape

The landscape laboratory is located on the areas of the cities of Neunkirchen and Friedrichsthal as well as the communities of Schiffweiler, Merchweiler and Qui greatest and has a size of 988 hectares. The core areas No. 3 Schafwald, No. 4 Saufangweiher, No. 5 Itzenplitz, No. 6 Post-mining landscape Heinitz, No. 7 Weiher east of the B41, No. 8 AHA-Hüttenpark Neunkirchen and Halde König, No. 9 Former clay pit belong to this landscape laboratory Neunkircher Ziegelwerk, No. 10 Halde and Schlammweiher Kohlwald and No. 11 Weiher east of the Bauershaus.

Urban-industrial habitats are represented in the area, the largest landscape laboratory and are home to extreme locations such as dumps, temporary waters and brownfield numerous specialized species like toad , yellow-bellied , blue-winged sand cricket , salt rush, helmet Azurjungfer or endangered forest edges and blackberry and Silberfleck- Mother-of-pearl butterfly. Here both succession processes are to be made possible and different pioneer locations are to be preserved. At the mud ponds and reservoirs, measures for the dismantling as well as the modeling and partly keeping open of the bank areas are planned.

The main species of this landscape laboratory is the yellow-bellied toad.

Landscape laboratory forestry and natural processes

The landscape laboratory is located in Quiigart and covers an area of 757 hectares. The core area no. 1 process protection area Quiigart, Schlammweiher and Bergehalde Göttelborn belongs to this laboratory.

By creating a near-natural forest structure and a correspondingly changed management by the state forest enterprise, the development of deciduous forest stands with a high proportion of old wood should take place and the natural processes in the forest should be impaired as little as possible.

The main species of this landscape laboratory is the black woodpecker .

activities

  • Hölzerbachtal: Demolition of a forest path over a length of 2 kilometers in the Hölzerbachtal natural forest cell, creation of amphibious waters.
  • Observation platform: A barrier-free observation platform was set up on the west bank of the Kohlbach mud pond.

Landscape laboratory bird migration and wild pastures

The landscape laboratory with a size of 187 hectares is located in the area of the municipalities of Illingen and Merchweiler in the area of the Hahnwies mud pond. The pond belonged to the former Göttelborn mine . The core area No. 2 Schlammweiher Hahnwies and the surrounding area is located in this landscape laboratory.

After the Göttelborn pit closed in 2000, the Hahnwies mud pond has developed into a breeding ground for water birds such as grebes , coots , pond rails and others and is used as a resting place during bird migration. This status is to be maintained and further expanded as part of the major nature conservation project. For this purpose, measures such as profiling the shallow bank with small bodies of water in the western area of the pond, leveling the existing island, fencing the pond down to the dam area and controlling the water level are planned. By creating a semi-open pasture landscape (including hut forest , pasture forest, shallow water zones with access for grazing animals at the pond), extensive pasture landscape (smooth oat meadows), keeping the dam crown of the pond open through the use of semi-wild cattle and ponies, succession of woody plants on the dam and steering the visitors the mud pond and its surroundings develop naturally and the immigration of other species is encouraged ( megaherbivore hypothesis ).

The main species of this landscape laboratory is the reed warbler .

activities

  • Merchtal: Demolition of the leisure facility formerly known as the "Alm", removal of fences and non-local trees. Fruit trees and solitary trees were left.
  • Hahnwies mud pond: on April 16, 2020, 13 Taurus cattle with five calves and on May 27, 2020 four Exmoor ponies were settled in the vicinity of the mud pond for year-round grazing.

Landscape laboratory reinvention of the miner's cow

Little Owl (Athene noctua)

This landscape laboratory is located in the municipalities of Illingen and Schiffweiler and has a total size of 424 hectares. The core areas No. 12 Graulheck and lower Mühlbachtal, No. 13 Middle and lower Fahrbachtal, No. 14 Upper Fahrbachttal, Eisenhümes, No. 15 Upper Mühlbachtal, No. 16 Auf der Kutt, No. 17 Zeisweiler Weiher and No. 17 belong to this landscape laboratory 18 Stockberg / Im Alten Roth. The goat that was kept by many mining families was jokingly referred to in Saarland as the miner's cow .

The focus of this landscape laboratory is on securing and further developing the agricultural landscape created by the miners, along with the renaturation of the Fahrbach, Mühlbach and Schwambach rivers. Bush-covered areas are reopened and kept free through the use of rare breeds of domestic animals.

The main species of this landscape laboratory is the red backed killer .

activities

  • Mühlbach: For a near-natural design and development of the Mühlbachaue, a part of the non-location spruce stock was removed in order to promote natural reforestation with deciduous trees. A former leisure area was dismantled.
  • Fahrbach: A bypass channel was built on a water ramp to slow it down. The flow velocity could be further reduced through structural measures (stone bar), which enables the migration of fish and small organisms. Ponds were also renatured (reconstruction and dismantling) and fences and buildings were removed.
  • Species protection project little owl : The species protection project for the little owl started in summer 2018. For this purpose, breeding caves were first hung in the project area. On November 7, 2018, eight little owls were introduced to the area. The owls come from the Neunkirchen Zoo , further little owl settlements are planned. The project will initially run for five years. Another eight little owls were released into the wild in August 2019.
  • Strietberg: On the Strietberg in Schiffweiler, a herd of Galloways was settled for the first time in the LIK.Nord area in May 2019. The grazing should keep the areas open and prevent bush encroachment.

Discovery trails and travel routes

Discovery paths are used to explore the landscape laboratories and to calm down sensitive areas to protect flora and fauna by directing visitors. With structures such as For example, a forest balcony in the Holzer conglomerate or observation towers at the Hahnwies and Göttelborn mud ponds, the core areas should be made tangible.

Travel routes network the core areas and are primarily designed for cyclists, but also include hiking trails.

Others

  • The property management for the major nature conservation project was taken over by Naturland Ökoflächen-Management GmbH (ÖFM) in mid-2015.
  • In June 2019 the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation published a short film about the project.

Planned establishment of a hypermarket

Election poster for the 2017 state election in Saarland by Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen for the establishment of a hypermarket in the Betzenhölle in Neunkirchen.

In April 2015 it became known that Globus Holding was planning to build a hypermarket in Neunkirchen / Saar. A plot of land in the Betzenhölle in Neunkirchen with a direct motorway connection was considered as a possible location. The district town of Neunkirchen and the district council in Neunkirchen approved the settlement. Since the area belongs to the core area of the LIK.Nord project, this would have led to an outsourcing from the project. Critics of this project, in particular the Mayor of Illingen, Dr. Armin König, saw the funding of the large-scale nature conservation project at risk as a result of this, as there is no contractual provision for outsourcing the area. On December 22nd, 2016, the association assembly of the Landschaft der Industriekultur Nord special purpose association approved the spin-off of the Betzenhölle area with 21 to 9 votes (with one abstention). After further resistance to the Globus settlement, such as the establishment of a citizens' initiative "Pro Betzenhölle" in January 2017 and further public discussion, the Federal Environment Ministry joined the dispute in May 2017. Those responsible from the Saarland Ministry of the Environment and the Zweckverband were invited to Bonn at the beginning of June. In this conversation it should be clarified whether the majority of the association is still behind the major nature conservation project. The current head of the association, Patrick Weydmann, mayor of the Merchweiler community, informed the members of the association about this on July 7, 2017. During the conversation in Bonn it became clear that outsourcing Betzenhölle from the project area would result in an audit of the funding program by the Federal Audit Office. Cancellation of the funding would mean the end of the LIK.Nord project. The members of the association agreed not to take such a risk, which means the end for Globus at the Betzenhölle location. Previously, at the beginning of June 2017, several media reported on Globus Holding's search in Neunkirchen for alternative locations to Betzenhölle.
