Jan Lindenau (born June 14, 1979 in Lübeck ) is a German banker and local politician ( SPD ). He was elected mayor of Lübeck on November 19, 2017 . He took office on May 1, 2018.

Life

Lindenau attended the Emanuel Geibel School in Lübeck, which he left in 1996 with the secondary school leaving certificate. He then learned the profession of banker from 1996 to 1999 at the Hanse School for Economics and Administration and has been in this profession since 1999.

He has been a member of the SPD since 2000 ; three years later, as chairman of the youth welfare committee of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, he received his first political mandate, which he held until 2012.

In 2011 he was elected to the Lübeck citizenship . In 2013 he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and member of the council of elders and chairman of the main committee. Lindenau was also represented on the supervisory boards of various municipal companies until 2018.

In November 2016, Lindenau announced its candidacy for the office of mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The incumbent mayor Bernd Saxe had decided not to run again. On February 11, 2017, Lindenau was officially named a candidate at the Lübeck SPD's district party conference, where he received 13 votes more than his opponent Konstanze Wagner.

Lindenau prevailed in a runoff election on November 19, 2017 with 50.9% of the votes cast against the non-party Kathrin Weiher , who was able to achieve a relative majority in the first ballot. Lindenau took over the office of mayor on May 1, 2018 from Bernd Saxe.

In January 2018, Lindenau resigned as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in anticipation of taking office as mayor of Lübeck.

Private

Lindenau is married and has one son. He lives in the Lübeck district of Sankt Lorenz .
