Hans-Bernhard "Bernd" Saxe (born March 30, 1954 in Ibbenbüren ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2000 to 2018 he was the first directly elected mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck .

Life

Post-high school he studied from 1972 to 1975 at Siemens in Dortmund the profession of industrial clerk . In 1972 Saxe joined IG Metall and later became a Ver.di member. In 1972 Saxe also became a member of the SPD. From 1972 to 1980, he studied social sciences at the University of Economics and Politics , which he completed with a degree in social economics. He has lived in Lübeck since 1975, where he did his community service with the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) until 1976 . From 1980 to 1984 he was federal chairman of the AWO youth organization. In 1983 he became managing director of the SPD Lübeck, from 1992 to 2000 he was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament .

In 2000 he was elected as the successor to Michael Bouteiller (SPD) as the 228th mayor of Lübeck. In the Lübeck mayoral election on September 4, 2005, he narrowly missed the absolute majority with 47.2 percent of the votes in the first ballot. His opponent in the runoff election on September 18, 2005 was the CDU candidate Michael Koch. Saxe won the runoff election with 62 percent.

In the first round of mayoral elections on November 6, 2011 (official final result in brackets), Social Democrat Bernd Saxe (42.1%) faced five challengers. The CDU candidate was Alexandra Dinges-Dierig (28.0%). In addition, Thorsten Fürter from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen (19.4%) and three other applicants stood for election. Saxe won the runoff election on November 20, 2011 with 61.2 percent of the votes cast, while Alexandra Dinges-Dierig received 38.8 percent.

In the mayoral election in 2017, Saxe decided not to run again. His successor Jan Lindenau (SPD) took over the office of mayor on May 1, 2018.
