The nature reserve Peenetal from Salem to Jarmen is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The designation took place on February 9, 2009 and covers the western part of the large nature conservation project Peenetallandschaft with a size of 6,716 hectares . The previous nature reserves Devener Holz (N 25) and Moorwiesen near Neukalen (N 65) merge into this nature reserve. A large part of the area is protected under EU law as a European bird sanctuary and FFH area . The designation is intended to secure and develop a large and complete section of the Peene Valley as a typical river moor in the north-east German lowlands. The area is characterized by unsparing and lack of disturbance. The southern part is in the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Kummerower See nature reserve . To the south of Kützerhof, part of the area is being scientifically examined as the Großer Lähnhorst natural forest reserve .

Part of the area has been owned by the NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage since 2009 .

Territorial division

The nature reserve consists of three parts from west to east:

  • Peene valley from Salem to Demmin
  • Peene valley from Demmin to Loitz
  • Peene valley from Loitz to Jarmen

Flora and fauna

Due to the size of the area, a large number of habitats can be found. Highlighting values breeding birds in the reserve are bluethroat , kingfisher , common tern , curlew , teal , crane , black-headed gull , shoveler , red-backed shrike , bittern , marsh harrier , red kite , Gadwall , Black-necked Grebe , black woodpecker , eagle , barred warbler , northern pintail , black tern , Spotted Crake , Little Crake , Corncrake , White stork and whiskered tern . Additionally, we are in spring and autumn the catch birds White-fronted Goose , Bean Goose , Gadwall, Pintail, Smew and Tundra Swan .

The beaver lives in high population in the area.
