Nature reserve Peat Stuer

The nature reserve Torfstiche Stuer is a 55 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania two kilometers south-east of Stuer . It was placed under protection on February 16, 1978 with the aim of protecting and developing an upland moor mainly covered with forest. The area was expanded in 1999.

The current state of the area is assessed as unsatisfactory, as a network of drainage ditches drains the areas. A renaturation project in the neighboring Rogeezer Bruch has a positive effect on the water balance.

There are no public roads in the protected area. An observation pulpit near the ruins of the Stuer moated castle enables glimpses of the adjacent areas.

History and water balance

The areas of today's protected area were decisively shaped by the last Ice Age. You are on the edge of a former ice-edge location. In an excavated hollow form, a swamp bog developed first , on which a raised bog could then grow. The area, initially separated naturally by a threshold from the Stuerer lake basin to the west, was drained in this direction by digging ditches. Stuer Castle was to the west of the protected area . Peat mining began in the 19th century and continued until the middle of the 20th century. During the GDR era, the adjacent lake basin was intensively drained, which also significantly impaired the moor.

Flora and fauna

On more humid locations, there is still original bog vegetation with peat moss , swamp porst , narrow-leaved cotton grass , cranberries and blackberry . Birch , mountain ash , buckthorn and ash cover a large part of the area. Breeding birds in the area are the honey buzzard , crane and woodcock . The dragonfly fauna is represented by the species high-moor mosaic maiden , peat maiden maiden and moss maiden.
