The city of Röbel / Müritz is approx. 17 km, the city of Plau am See 10 km away.

Stuer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Zislow in the north, Fünfseen in the northeast, Altenhof in the southeast, Ganzlin in the southwest and west and Plau am See in the northwest.

The districts of Stuer, Bad Stuer, Neu Stuer and Stuer Vorwerk belong to the municipality of Stuer.

history

The remains of several prehistoric large stone graves can be found in the municipality . Stuer was first episcopally deposited by name in 1289. From the 14th century, Stuer was the place of jurisdiction for the surrounding area from Röbel to Malchow (Mecklenburg) . Today's Plauer See - one of the large Mecklenburg lakes - was called Lacus Sturichse (Sturer See) in 1178 . With a brief interruption in the 19th century, Stuer belonged to the Flotow family (noble family) for around 600 years . The castle Stuer as the ancestral seat of the Flotow (noble family) was built in the middle of the 14th century as a moated castle. After a fire in 1660 the castle was abandoned. The church was rebuilt in 1717 as a half-timbered building.

The district of Bad Stuer with a hydropathic institute operated by the naturopath ("water doctor") Heinrich Friedrich Francke (pseudonym: JH Rausse) was established in 1845. The institute began with 18 rooms in a modest house, but soon Mr. von Flotow, the owner of the property, left Stuer to build a larger lodging house in which up to 120 spa guests could find accommodation. The most famous spa guest was Fritz Reuter , who stayed here twice to get his problems with excessive consumption of red wine under control - probably with little success. While the spa guests were initially treated according to the principles of water healing by Vincenz Prießnitz , the methods of healing treatment later followed the views of Sebastian Kneipp . In 1862 Gustav Bardey took over the management of the water sanatorium, which had been neglected under his predecessor Caesar Wilhelm Stuhlmann , and later acquired it from the von Flotow family. In autumn 1863 Iacob Negruzzi stayed in Stuer for a water cure. With Bardey's great personal commitment, the spa business flourished significantly. From 1870 to 1880, the trained gardener had the surrounding area reforested with beeches and oaks and a total of 16 kilometers of hiking trails laid out. The city of Plau made him an honorary citizen in 1887. Since almost all of the managers of the spa were not medical professionals, Plauer doctors such as Ludwig Dornblüth , Wilhelm Maas and Wilhelm Wilde took over the medical care. With the outbreak of the First World War , the spa business gradually came to a standstill and finally ended completely when Russian and French prisoners of war were quartered. In 1923 the inventory was auctioned and part of the building was demolished.

In addition to agriculture, Stuer is increasingly shaped by tourism, especially on Lake Plauer.
