The municipality of Melz am Melzer See is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District , between Röbel / Müritz and the upper Eldetal . The slightly hilly terrain around Melz reaches 76  m above sea level. NHN . The city of Röbel / Müritz is about eight kilometers away, Priborn about three kilometers.

Melz is surrounded by the neighboring communities Röbel / Müritz in the north, Südmüritz in the northeast, Priborn in the east, Buchholz in the southeast, Kieve in the southwest and Bollewick in the west and northwest.

The districts of Augusthof, Friedrichshof, Karbow and Melz belong to the community .

history

The area of ​​Melz was already settled at the beginning of the Bronze Age about 3800 years ago. This is indicated by the dagger finds from the 1970 excavations. Melz first appeared in a document in 1298. The owners of the goods in Melz included the von Werle , von Hahn , von Knuth and most recently (from 1732 to 1945) von Ferber families . The manor house, built after 1810, was destroyed by arson in May 1945.

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag. The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg. It shows a looking bull's head with torn off neck fur and crown and the inscription "GEMEINDE MELZ".

Economy and Infrastructure

Melz is now a modern village with numerous new homes. Agriculture and small craft businesses shape the community, which, contrary to the trend in Mecklenburg, has kept its population largely constant.

The federal highway 198 from Plau am See to Neustrelitz runs through the municipality. The Röbel motorway junction of the Federal Motorway 19 (Berlin – Rostock) is about twelve kilometers away, the nearest train station is about 16 kilometers and is in Mirow .

The Förderverein Dorf-Kirche-Melz , founded in 2005 and already counting 50 members in 2008, advocates the renovation of the village church, the improvement of the water quality of the Melzer See, the appreciation of a historical personality of Melz, the architect Hermann Willebrand , and the participation shaping village life.
