History and architecture

Predecessor churches

A church is mentioned at this point as a branch church of Buchholz at the end of the 13th century . Both Melz and Buchholz had only a few residents and so they had to be content with a pastor. The Melzer Church became independent again in 1669. The church from 1552 was demolished in 1816 and replaced by the current building.

Current church

The flat-roofed rectangular building was built in brick in 1816 . The square west tower was pulled in, it is crowned with a copper-covered helmet , a globe, a weathercock and a cross. The originally plastered walls of the building with corner rustics are structured by arched windows.

Furnishing

  • The carved altar was made around 1500. In the shrine there is a crescent Madonna surrounded by eight saints. The wings of the altar are painted and inside show scenes from the life of Jesus, which were heavily painted over around 1816. The outside shows a high quality preaching as well as the apostles Peter and Paul.
  • The pulpit with evangelist paintings is a work from the time the church was built.
  • The two boxes on both sides of the altar are painted with coats of arms and were built in 1818.
  • The prayer chair dates from around 1724
  • The two bells from medieval times are undated.

graveyard

Cemetery with sarcophagi

On the listed cemetery there are two listed sarcophagi in front of the tower with the remains of the von Ferber family from 1750 to 1752 (originally in the Ferber crypt chapel). The cemetery is surrounded by a recent brick wall.
