Location of the municipality Kargow in the Mecklenburg Lake District | ||
Kargow is a municipality in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is administered by the Lake Landscape Department in Waren , based in the city of Waren (Müritz) .
geography
The Kargows municipality in the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District is largely located in the Müritz National Park . Located southeast of Waren (Müritz), the area includes vast forests, moors and lakes, of which the Hofsee , the Specker See and the Priesterbäker See should be emphasized. The partly hilly terrain reaches 100.2 meters above sea level in the Käflingsberg . NN the highest point. The Ostpeene rises only a few hundred meters west of the village of Kargow , and the Havel spring is located in the neighboring municipality of Ankershagen .
XKargow is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Torgelow am See in the north, Schloen-Dratow in the northeast, Kratzeburg in the southeast, Rechlin in the south and Waren (Müritz) in the west.
The districts of Damerow, Federow, Godow, Rehhof, Schwarzenhof and Speck belong to Kargow.
history
Kargow
Barrows from the Bronze Age indicate an early settlement in the area northeast of the Müritz. Originally settled by Slavs , Kargow and Federow have existed since the 13th century.
In addition to the traditionally dominant agriculture, national park tourism is increasingly shaping the image of the places in Kargow. In 1998 the National Park Information Building was opened in Federow.
bacon
Landowners were u. a. the families von Holstein (until the 18th century), von Rohr, von Haugwitz and the Prussian State Councilor and publisher Dr. Kurt Hermann (1929-1945). The Speck manor house dates back to around 1930, was the Soviet headquarters in 1945, then refugee accommodation, seat of the forest administration from 1954 a rest home (border police and NVA) and then privatized from 1991 to 1998 National Park Office.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In blue a torn off golden eagle head over two diagonally crossed golden ears with seven black awns."
The coat of arms and the flag were designed by the Schwerin heraldist Heinz Kippnick . It was approved together with the flag on April 4, 2005 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under No. 295 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Reasons for the coat of arms: In the coat of arms, the eagle's head is supposed to symbolize the Müritz National Park as one of the last retreats for the sea eagles and ospreys, which are threatened with extinction. The ears of wheat stand for agriculture, which has always been important, especially grain cultivation. |
flag
The flag is striped of blue, money and blue across the longitudinal axis of the flag cloth. The blue stripes each take up a quarter, the yellow stripe takes up half the length of the flag cloth. In the middle of the yellow stripe is the municipal coat of arms, which takes up two thirds of the height of the flag. The relation of the height of the flag cloth to the length is like 3: 5.
Official seal
The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "GEMEINDE KARGOW".

Remarkable old trees
Tree veterans in Federow
- Oak in Federow
( Natural monument ) The mighty old sessile oak stands a little to the north, outside the town, directly on the road to Waren. The single tree standing in the open field is estimated to be 500 years old. Its trunk, which was open at the bottom and partly rotten inside, measured 5.91 m in circumference when measured in 2014. The obliquely grown oak has an uneven crown and reaches a height of 18 m.
- Elm in Federow
The gnarled white elm stands on the other side of Federow on the southern outskirts, also directly on the main road. Your age is given as 150 years. What makes this tree special is its bizarre, furrowed, compact, short base trunk that stands on a spreading root base ( buttress root ). The trunk circumference measured in 2014 is 3.85 m. The tree height 15 m.
- Oak at the Krummen See
It stands on the lakeshore of the "Krummen See" near Federow, in the grove at the end of the field path that leads to the lake. The very vital, 450–550 year old sessile oak has a full, very wide crown. Its trunk circumference is 5.2 m (1994) and its height 25 m.
Tree veterans in bacon
Village linden in bacon
(Natural monument) The old Specker village linden tree stands a little west of the manor in an open field. The age of the winter linden tree entered in the list of distinctive and old tree specimens is given as 500–800 years. The huge trunk of the imposing tree veteran is partially hollow inside and the outer shell is wide open in many places. It looks like several trees have grown together into one. Even at a low height, the trunk branches out into a deep, wide crown of sloping, thick branches. However, a deep, thick branch grows horizontally from the end of the trunk and is supported. In 2014, the linden tree had a measured chest height circumference of 9.5 m and a height of 15 m.
- Oak in the Specker Schloßpark
(Natural monument) The Specker Parkeiche, which is also listed, stands on private property in the former park of the Speck Hunting Lodge. The age of the fairytale-like English oak is given as 500–600 years. One of the strong branches that started deep in the tree has visibly broken off the trunk. In 2016, the tree had a chest height of 7.38 m and a height of 18 m.
- Old pines Old glassworks
The group of trees made up of 30 mighty, old pines stands on the "Fischerberg", at the entrance to Speck. The striking black pines surround the place where the Specker Glashütte buildings were located until 1850 . It is a question of strong-branched individual trees that are loosely connected to each other. Multi-stemmed specimens can also be found among them. Their age is estimated to be 200–250 years. The thickest of the trees has a trunk circumference of 3.3 m, the highest reaches a height of 25 m.
- "Corkscrew oak"
(Natural monument) Twisted old hat oak on a hill southeast of Speck. It is part of a group of three sessile oaks with a similar twisting habit. The "main oak" is estimated to be 450-550 years old. The other two are likely to be of comparable age. The girth of the large oak was measured in 2014 at 5.3 m, at a height of 20 m. There are no measurements for the other two tree veterans.
- Hat oaks on the wasteland
Grove of four old hat oaks. You are on the small fallow land - a wild field - in the forest south of Speck, not far from Lake Priesterbäker. The tree protector and forest scientist Hans Joachim Fröhlich described them in 1994 in the book "Paths to Old Trees" as: Four hatched oaks in Specker Park. Full crowns, very different branching . The thickest of the four oaks still had a trunk circumference of 6.20 m in 2000; the age was given by Fröhlich as 300–400 years. In the meantime, however, the four tree veterans have suffered a lot; Strong branches and trunk parts have broken off.
- 700-year-old English oak
(Natural monument) The so-called "Nesteiche" stands on the forest road / bike path from Speck to Zartwitz, in the forest near the fallow area with the 4 hat oaks. According to the sign attached, this pedunculate oak, also known as the hat tree, is said to be over 700 years old. Arborists, however, estimate them to be between 350 and 500 years old. In a photograph from 2013 it still shows a stately, upwardly fanned crown, but the age of the tree can already be clearly seen, many branches have broken off, the bark has burst and the oak looks sick overall. A measurement in 2014 showed a chest height of 5.8 m and a height of 20 m.
Infrastructure
Kargow is 3 km from the federal highway 192 ( Waren (Müritz) - Neubrandenburg ). Country roads connect the districts with each other (the southern district of Speck is approx. 12 km from the village of Kargow). The station is located on the railway line from Berlin to Rostock ( Lloydbahn ), but since September 2011 no passenger trains have stopped there due to the expansion of the line. There are daily connections to Waren with regional buses operated by Personenverkehr Müritz GmbH .
The Berlin-Copenhagen cycle route runs through the municipality.
