Verchen [ fɛʁçən ] is a Western Pomeranian municipality in the north of the Mecklenburg Lake District . The community is located southwest of Demmin and belongs to the Demmin-Land office . Until 2004, Verchen was administered by the Borrentin Office.
Geography and traffic
Verchen is about twelve kilometers southwest of Demmin. The B 194 runs east of the municipality and can be reached via the Borrentin district of Lindenhof. The community is located on the north bank of the Kummerower See near the outflow of the Peene .
history
The village of Verchen was first mentioned in 1164, when the battle of Verchen also took place. There was a Benedictine monastery here from the 13th century until the Reformation .
The monastery Verchen was from a Slavic founded nobleman named Janice of Virchin. It is from him that the name of the municipality of Verchen comes from. In 1255 the griffin duke Wartislaw III. the village the monastery. From 2004 to 2015 a small community of sisters from the Christbruderschaft Selbitz lived in the monastery . The Verchen manor dates from around 1700 and is now a hotel for children and young people.

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag . The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the region of Western Pomerania . It shows an upright griffin with a raised tail and the inscription "GEMEINDE VERCHEN * LANDKREIS MECKLENBURGISCHE SEENPLATTE".

- Early Gothic former monastery church St. Marien , construction of which began around 1270, has the oldest glass paintings in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
