The monastery church in Verchen , a community in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , goes back to the former Verchen monastery , which existed at this point from the 13th to the 16th century. The stained glass windows in the choir are among the most important art treasures of the church , and the remains of several altars from the 15th and 16th centuries have been preserved in the church.

Building history and architecture

The construction of the church began after the monastery moved to Verchen in 1269. The core of the church is a rectangular brick building with a flat ceiling and slender lancet windows , which are arranged in groups of three on the south side, or in groups of two on the north side. In the 15th century, the church was supplemented by the five-sided east-facing choir and the tower rising on the north side, in the basement of which a side chapel was set up, which today serves as the entrance hall. The facade of the tower is structured by several panels . A sacristy is built on the south side of the church .

Glass and wall paintings

The stained glass from the late 15th century in the choir windows is one of the church's most important art treasures . These are among the oldest preserved stained glass in Mecklenburg and show a crucifixion group in the middle group of windows, an Anna herself-third between Peter and Paul in the south group of windows and a Madonna between Christophorus and Johannes Baptist to the north. In the lower area of the glass windows there are coats of arms of various regional noble families.

Various paintings from the 15th century have been preserved on the walls of the nave and in the choir vault. In addition to scenic representations (partially covered in the nave), the unusual drolleries with colored grimaces in the choir vault are particularly noticeable.

Altars and Figures

The top of the altar in the choir consists of the central shrine of a carved altar from around 1420 with a colored scene of the Annunciation and a representation of the Trinity on an angel pedestal, above a tracery comb of the same age. The painted predella with a handkerchief of Veronica , held by angels and flanked by Peter and Paul, dates from around 1500.

In the tower chapel, the remains of another carved altar with various figures of saints from the beginning of the 16th century are exhibited. The wooden crucifix hung in the choir arch and three large carved figures (mourning John, Mary and John again) also date from the 15th century.

Other equipment

The colored pulpit with richly carved decoration dates from the middle of the 17th century. The organ on the gallery in the rear part of the nave was made in 1881 by Barnim Grüneberg in Stettin.

The church has three historic bells that were cast in Friedland in 1460, 1619 by Dietrich Lamprecht and in 1740 by Michael Begun . The church treasures also include various silver and tin liturgical implements from the 15th to 18th centuries.
