history
13th century until today
Documents from the 13th century report that Wesenberg was founded in 1252 by Prince Nikolaus I von Werle , but passed into the possession of Margrave Otto IV of Brandenburg as early as 1276 after a battle near Groß Trebbow . Only two years later, Schwerin's town charter was confirmed and a castle was built in 1282. In 1292, as part of the Stargard rule and thus part of the Wittum of the Brandenburg margrave's daughter Beatrix, the place came into the hands of the Mecklenburg people when they married Prince Heinrich II (the Lion) of Mecklenburg. Wesenberg became a country town in Mecklenburg and, as such, part of the towns in the Stargardian district , which were represented in the Mecklenburg provincial parliaments of the territorial estates united in 1523 until 1918 . In 1326, Wesenberg came into the possession of Ritter von Plote. A few years later, the city suffered setbacks in economic development and the decline in population caused by the plague and epidemics. The Buristsorpe desert was mentioned in the 14th century .
The Reformation reached Wesenberg at the latest in 1529, when Duke Heinrich the Peaceful summoned the preacher Laurentius Cassube to the Wesenberg parish. In 1610, the chronicler Latomus described the place as "a pretty well- situated town, rich in water and wood, but agriculture is a bit poor ... there is also a manor house there, on which a bailiff is kept, the Havel drives a two-part grain and fulling mill." In 1648, Wesenberg, like many other cities, was on the verge of ruin after the Thirty Years' War . For many decades, the city's situation did not improve significantly. Several fires raged there. As an important finding from this, it was stipulated that in the future the houses should be built with a greater distance from one another, which can still be seen in many cases today. Looting in the 18th century also made the economic upswing difficult. In 1806 French troops occupied the city and stayed there for a few years.
The country school regulations of 1825 led, at least in the Domanium , to compulsory schooling all year round. As a result, Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel built a new school in Hohen Strasse in 1832/33 . The post office was built the following year. The first gymnastics and sports club in the city was founded in 1886.
In 1890 the city was connected to the Buschhof – Neustrelitz line of the Neustrelitz-Wesenberg-Mirower railway company (later the Friedrich Wilhelm railway company ). On May 17th, the first train from Neustrelitz to Mirow drove on the new route.
In 1897 a distillery was built at the train station, where schnapps was distilled from potatoes until the 1970s. In 1908 the place received electricity. In the 1920s and 1930s a volunteer fire brigade, a new train station and in 1937 a cinema that is now back in operation were built in Wesenberg.
During the GDR times, a youth hostel was built on Lake Labus , which was also used as a children's holiday camp and is now run as a family hotel .
In the second half of the 1960s at Lake Woblitz, numerous jobs were created for the city and the surrounding areas in the wood processing industry, which emerged from a smaller sawmill. After 1990 operations could no longer be maintained.
From 1992 onwards, extensive renovation of the city and the castle began. a. as part of urban development funding .
From 1952 to 1994 Wesenberg belonged to the Neustrelitz district (until 1990 in the GDR district of Neubrandenburg , then in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). In 1994 the city was incorporated into the Mecklenburg-Strelitz district. Since the district reform in 2011 , it has been in the Mecklenburg Lake District .
Ahrensberg
The current district of Ahrensberg remained an exclave of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in the Strelitz part of the state after the Mecklenburg main state division in 1701 until its unification in 1934 .

coat of arms
Blazon : “In silver on a green mountain, three red towers; the middle a round tower with a pointed roof and golden high cross; the outer pinnacle towers with two growing, facing each other, golden armed red eagle heads. "
The coat of arms was redrawn around 1978 and registered under the number 219 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Justification for the coat of arms: The coat of arms is based on the seal image of the S (IGILLVM) CIVITATIS DE WESENBERGE - made before 1300, first handed down as an imprint in 1354. In the national emblem, the green mountain is likely to be a talking symbol that depicts the place name (wese = meadow), which comes from Middle Low German. The towers symbolize a fortified, defensive city. The two red eagle heads and the main colors red and silver indicate the rule of the Margraves of Brandenburg, who confirmed the town charter in 1278 Wesenberg. |
flag
The flag was designed by the Wesenberger Helmut Rumich and approved on September 14, 2001 by the Ministry of the Interior.
The flag is evenly striped lengthways with green, white and red. In the middle of the white stripe, at half the height of the green and red stripes, is the city coat of arms. The length of the flag is related to the height as 5: 3.
Official seal
The official seal shows the city coat of arms with the inscription "STADT WESENBERG * LANDKREIS MECKLENBURGISCHE SEENPLATTE".
