Surname
The name Wieck is derived from a Low German word for bay (see -wik , compare Wyk auf Föhr and Kiel-Wik ).
geography
Wieck is located on the southern side of the Darß peninsula of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain on the Bodstedter Bodden between Born and Prerow , about five kilometers south of Prerow and about 35 km northeast of Rostock . In the east the community borders on the Prerower Strom .
history
After belonging to the Duchy of Pomerania for centuries , the municipality belonged to Swedish Pomerania after the Thirty Years War . From 1715 to 1720 Wieck a. Darß to the Kingdom of Denmark until the end of the Great Northern War .
The community was then part of the Franzburg-Barth district until 1952 and then belonged to the Ribnitz-Damgarten district in the Rostock district until 1994 . Wieck has been part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990.
In Wieck a. Darß -Wieck , a satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, was located there. It existed from January 1941 to the end of February 1941.
Coat of arms, flag, official seal
The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag . The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the region of Western Pomerania . It shows an upright griffin with a raised tail and the inscription "GEMEINDE WIECK A. DARß".

Events
Wieck is one of the three locations of the Darss Nature Film Festival , where the German Nature Film Prize is awarded every autumn. The venue is the National Park Center Darßer Arche .
Since 2006, the Darß Marathon has taken place annually at the end of April or beginning of May . The start and finish point of the runs are in Wieck auf dem Darß at the Darßer Arche National Park Center in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. The route begins in Wieck an der Darßer Arche and leads first along the Wiecker Wiesen to Prerow and from there into the Darß Forest. The number of participants is limited to around 1200. There are runs in the categories of marathon, half marathon, half marathon walking and children's run Bambini.
Transport links
Wieck can be reached via Landstrasse 21, which leads past the site to the north. This leads from Ribnitz-Damgarten along the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain to Barth. The place can be reached from Barth via the Meiningenbrücke and Prerow.
