Geography and localization

Altenkirchen lies between the Tromper Wiek in the east and the open Baltic Sea in the north. The municipality covers the central part of the Wittow peninsula . Except for the coastal forests in the north and east, the slightly hilly municipal area is almost free of forests and is largely used for agriculture.

In the north of the municipality a high bank path runs along the Baltic Sea coast to Cape Arkona . This path touches the Bakenberg recreation area with a sandy beach below the cliffs and the coastal forest.

In addition to Altenkirchen, the municipality includes the following districts:

history

The construction of the church probably began as early as 1185. A stone from the Jaromarsburg , the sanctuary of Svantovit from Cape Arkona, was built into it . The stone is called the priest stone or svantevite stone . Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten was pastor at this church from 1792 to 1808.

The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania . With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and thus also the area of Altenkirchen became part of Swedish Pomerania . In 1815 Altenkirchen came to the Prussian province of Pomerania as part of New Western Pomerania .

From 1818 Altenkirchen belonged to the district of Rügen . Only in the years from 1952 to 1955 was it part of the Bergen district. The community then belonged to the Rügen district in the Rostock district until 1990 and became part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the same year. The district of Rügen, which has been called this again since 1990, was merged in 2011 in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.

For the preacher and forger Gottlieb Samuel Pristaff in the 18th century, the remote district of Drewoldke was the location for the alleged rune stone by Drewoldke based on the Swedish model, which Pristaff brought into circulation with drawings and text on Rügen and in Western Pomerania. The counterfeit product was considered genuine by Greifswald scholars at the time.

Coat of arms, flag, official seal

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag . The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the region of Western Pomerania . It shows an upright griffin with a raised tail and the inscription "GEMEINDE ALTENKIRCHEN * LANDKREIS VORPOMMERN-RÜGEN".
