Wittow Peninsula (Ruegen)

The Wittow peninsula (formerly also Wittmund ) is the northernmost part of the island of Rügen . It is bordered by the Baltic Sea in the north and east, the Wieker Bodden in the west and the Great Jasmunder Bodden in the south and east. The name Wittow could be derived from the Old Slavic word vitŭ for profit.

geography

There is only a land connection via the narrow spit of the Schaabe to the Jasmund peninsula . Wittow can also be reached via the car ferry from the Vaschvitz pier to the Wittow ferry district in Wieker . In the west of the peninsula is the Bug peninsula . It is the longest sand pit on Rügen, around 8 kilometers long and only 1.5 kilometers wide, is largely privately owned and is not allowed to be entered. Part of the peninsula is located in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park . Wittow's northernmost point is Gellort, about 1 kilometer northwest of Cape Arkona . It is also the northernmost point of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . At the foot of the Gellort is the Siebenschneiderstein , the fourth largest boulder on Rügen. The peninsula is characterized by the steep coast in the north and the flat lagoon landscape in the south. Due to the exposure to wind, Wittow is also called "Windland".

The four communities Altenkirchen , Breege (including Juliusruh ), Dranske , Putgarten and Wiek are located on Wittow . Until 2005 they were organized in the Wittow Office , which was administered in the Altenkirchen district of Lanckensburg . Today the Wittower communities belong to the North Rügen Office .
