history
Breege goes back to a Slavic settlement and was first mentioned in a document in 1313.
The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania . With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and thus also the area of Breege became part of Swedish Pomerania . In 1815 Breege came to the Prussian province of Pomerania as part of New Western Pomerania .
Since 1818 Breege belonged to the district of Rügen . Only in the years from 1952 to 1955 was it part of the Bergen district. The community then belonged to the Rügen district in the Rostock district until 1990 and became part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the same year. The district of Rügen, which has been called this again since 1990, was merged in 2011 in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.
coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on August 25, 1998 and registered under the number 169 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Blazon : “Divided by a wave cut; above in silver a growing, gold-tongued and armored, double-tailed red lion; below in blue a golden anchor with a w-shaped, curved golden rope, each with a silver linden leaf. "
The coat of arms was designed by the Weimar heraldist Michael Zapfe .
Attractions
- In Breege there are several typical captains' houses from the 18th and 19th centuries as an indication that Breege was once a place of seafarers and was at times the richest village on Rügen.
- Memorial complex for the fallen in World War I in Breege
- Breege harbor
- In the district of Juliusruh was the ten-hectare park Juliusruh , created by Julius von der Lancken in 1795 and built in the French and English styles. A granite monument is dedicated to the initiator of this park and founder of the village. Only a part of the park has been preserved as a spa park. The castle was destroyed.
- Remainder of the Schwedenschanze from 1759 on the outskirts of Juliusruh
economy
The main occupation today is tourism, which has played a role here since 1895. The prevailing fishing industry has almost completely lost its importance. From the port of Breege, boat trips to the island of Hiddensee as well as the Störtebeker Festival and tours over the Great Jasmunder Bodden are offered in the summer months . The jetty is mainly used by the local sailing school and for recreational shipping. In winter 2018/19 it was greatly expanded to create more berths.
Rescue station of the DGzRS
Since 1997 there has been a rescue station of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) for the North Rügen Bay in Breege . In 2005 the station received a new building for the volunteers. When the alarm is raised , they occupy the Manfred Hessdörfer sea rescue boat , a completely new type of lifeboat at DGzRS. The Rigid Buoyant Boat of the 8.5-meter class is made entirely of plastic, extremely robust and requires little maintenance. With its draft of 88 centimeters, the boat is ideal for the shallow lagoon waters of the Baltic Sea. It replaced the old Dornbusch boat in 2019 .
