history
Küstrow and Dabitz were first mentioned in 1280, Kenz was first mentioned in 1313 and Rubitz was first mentioned in 1317. The places are of Slavic origin. Until 1325 Kenz belonged to the Principality of Rügen, when the Princely House died out it came to the Duchy of Pomerania and in 1648 to Swedish Pomerania .
With the apparition of Maria Pomerana Miraculosa and the Kenzer miracle fountain, Kenz became an important place of pilgrimage around 1395. In 1405 Duke Barnim VI also searched here . von Pommern-Wolgast cured the plague in vain and was buried in Kenz. The wooden shrine (cenotaph) in St. Mary's Church houses the life-size figure of the Duke. With the Reformation, the importance of Kenz declined. At the end of the 18th century, however, the fountain was rediscovered and Kenz developed into one of the most important health resorts in Western Pomerania.
After the transfer of Swedish Pomerania to Prussia and the assignment to the province of Pomerania in 1815, the spa business declined and soon came to a complete standstill. In November 1872, the Baltic storm flood in 1872 flooded large parts of the town.
The localities of the municipality were part of the Franzburg-Barth district until 1952 and then belonged to the Ribnitz-Damgarten district in the Rostock district until 1994 .
Until January 1, 2005, the community was part of the Barth Land Office and has been part of the Barth Office since then . The community was formed by the merger of the communities Kenz and Küstrow on December 31, 1999.
