history

The castle of Lietzow (also: Schlösschen Lichtenstein )

Lietzow goes back to the name of a Slavic settlement.

The place became known through the considerable finds from the Neolithic and the Lietzow culture named for it. In 1827 Friedrich von Hagenow found the flint workshops at the northern exit of Lietzow . In 1867 and 1886 Rudolf Virchow collected flint shavings, knives, battle axes and other flint objects at the Augustenhof site. The larger site is located south of the place on the peninsula. Alfred Haas first found many flint tools there in the gravel quarry in 1897. Like the one north of Lietzow, the site was interpreted as a workshop. Around 1920, numerous antler and stone implements were found there not far from the first spot, as did a systematic investigation by W. Petzsch in 1923 .

The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania . With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and thus also the area of Lietzow became part of Swedish Pomerania . In 1815 Lietzow came to the Prussian province of Pomerania as part of New Western Pomerania . Since 1818 Lietzow belonged to the district of Rügen .

After the construction of the railway line over the Lietzow dam, the builder had a villa built for himself . Around 1892/93 the local residence was built as a copy of Lichtenstein Castle near Reutlingen on the Swabian Alb, which was built in 1839 through the conversion of a medieval castle . The client was the railway technician Bopp, who was responsible for the construction of the Bergen-Sassnitz railway line. The building was initially referred to as "Villa am Dorf" and since 1896 as "Schlößchen Lichtenstein". It is a two-storey plastered building with a gable roof and tile cover, a stepped gable and a round five-storey tower.

From 1952 to 1955 Lietzow was part of the Bergen district. The community then belonged to the Rügen district in the Rostock district until 1990 and became part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the same year. The district of Rügen, which has been called this again since 1990, was merged in 2011 in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.

Semper: Estate of the von Jasmund families , von der Osten (18th century), von der Lancken (after 1900), Lietz and von Brüning (from 1913). In 1916–22 the two-storey, neo-baroque Semper Castle was built and the Semper Forest Park was laid out. Special features of the park are a rhododendron avenue at the entrance to the castle, a water tower built as a medieval castle tower and a grove of beech trees . After 1945 the manor house was used as a cultural center and training center. Today it is the police station of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein.

Coat of arms, flag, official seal

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag . The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the region of Western Pomerania . It shows an upright griffin with a raised tail and the inscription "GEMEINDE LIETZOW".
