Location of the Kleiner Jasmund Bodden

The Kleine Jasmunder Bodden belongs to the North Rügen Bodden and is a marginal water of the southern Baltic Sea within the island of Rügen . It is around seven kilometers long and a maximum of five kilometers wide (sometimes much narrower). It has an area of 28.4 square kilometers.

The water surface is limited in the north by the Jasmund peninsula , in the east by the Spit of the Schmalen Heide and in the south by the main part of the island of Rügen, the Muttland . In the northwest at Lietzow there is a connection to the Great Jasmunder Bodden via a drain with a lock . The two lagoons were not separated until 1869 when a dam was built ( Bundesstrasse 96 and the Stralsund – Sassnitz line ). This dam made the bay more or less a lake . The coast of the Bodden is relatively well structured, so the Pulitz peninsula protrudes far into the Bodden in the southwest . This is designated as the Pulitz nature reserve.

The water of the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden is hardly salty as there is no longer any direct connection to the Baltic Sea. The canal to the Great Jasmunder Bodden, which only has a salt content of 0.6 to 0.7 percent, is not sufficient for continuous salt input. The bay is said to be rich in fish. However, the water quality is poor due to the discharges from the Bergen sewage treatment plant and eutrophication has progressed significantly. However, an improvement in water quality is still being sought. The moorland of the Ossen lowlands near Buschvitz was renatured and a free connection between the Ossen and the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden was created. The dam to the Great Jasmunder Bodden and the dam between Stedar and the Pulitz peninsula are also to be opened.
