The Ossen is a lake on the municipal territory of Buschvitz and Ralswiek , district of Vorpommern-Rügen , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located northeast of the city of Bergen on Rügen in the Burnitzer Bruch wetland and is a very shallow lake. The lake and its surroundings had been artificially drained since 1835. A project was started in 2008, which ended in 2017 when the pumping station was shut down and a free connection between the Ossen and the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden was created. The lake belongs to the nature reserve Nordrügensche Bodden and Nonnensee . The lake and its surroundings were recognized as a national natural heritage in 2011 and are home to numerous species of birds, some of which are endangered, such as white-tailed eagles , cranes , kingfisher , bittern and corn corn .
