history
Prohn is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1240, in which the Slavic Prince of Rügen grants Stralsund city rights. Prohn was probably named after the Slavic god Perun . Prohn was temporarily the seat of a princely bailiwick and also the seat of the Principality of Rügen .
After belonging to the Principality of Rügen , Prohn fell to the Duchy of Pomerania in 1326 .
After the Thirty Years' War until 1815, the area belonged to Swedish Pomerania and then to the Prussian province of Pomerania .
The community was then part of the Franzburg-Barth district until 1952 and then belonged to the Stralsund district in the Rostock district until 1994 . Prohn has been part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990.
The population has doubled since 1990. This trend is due to the favorable location near the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, the scenic surroundings near the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park and the region's good infrastructure.

The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on September 10, 2001 and registered under the number 251 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
