Interior of the church

The Prohn village church is a brick- built Gothic church building in the Western Pomerania town of Prohn , which is used by the Protestant parish of Prohn / Groß Mohrdorf. The parish of Prohn / Groß Mohrdorf has been part of the Stralsund Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .

The church is surrounded by a cemetery.

history

The construction of the church building was erected from the middle of the 13th century on a hill on which the castle of the Rügen prince Wizlaw I had previously stood. The retracted square choir and the sacristy are early Gothic , the choir with typical groups of three pointed arched windows, but a reticulated vault that was probably built later . It is connected to the late Gothic nave from the early 14th century by a - of course - pointed triumphal arch . This is a single-pillar room with four bays, the smallest possible type of hall church .

From 1858 to 1862 the church was expanded in a neo-Gothic style under the direction of Johann Michael Lübke : the choir-wide tower from the 14th century was preserved up to the eaves. To the side of the old tower, open halls were laid out and this tower and the ship were brought under one roof. A slender new tower was placed in front of it. At the same time the choir side chapels were built.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the interior was restored according to today's controversial standards. Among other things, the galleries were removed.

The Hagemeister - Epitaph was restored by a donation from the family 2000th

On September 21, 2019, the church was robbed, causing damage of more than € 100,000. Wooden figures of the evangelists Lukas and Matthew as well as an angel, which belong to the retable and were created in the workshop of the Stralsund wood sculptor Jakob Freese from 1756–1758 , as well as two other angel figures were stolen.

Interior

The vault of the choir shows paintings from the end of the 15th century depicting Christ enthroned, flanked by Mary and John the Baptist. Glazed round arch friezes and rich, layered glazed curtain profiles adorn the choir.

The triumphal cross group shows on the back "The brazen snake from the desert migration" and is unique in the Baltic Sea region. It dates from the second quarter of the 15th century.

Further items of equipment are a baptismal angel (1727/28) from the workshop of Elias Keßler from Stralsund, the Hagemeister epitaph (third quarter of the 17th century), the sacristy stool (middle of the 18th century) and a grave slab of R. Beket († 1482) with an incised drawing of a cog .

Peal

The two bells made of chilled iron were made in 1958 by the Schilling company in Apolda .
