Elias Keßler
Elias Keßler , also Kessler (around 1685 ; † January 26, 1730 in Stralsund , Swedish-Pomerania ) was a German sculptor from Stralsund.
Live and act
Little is known about Keßler's origins and training; an apprenticeship in the circle of the Berlin academy led by Andreas Schlueter is likely given Kessler's work.
Karl Möller calls Keßler in his work "Stralsund Sculpture of the 18th Century" the leading sculptor in the province of Swedish Pomerania since the first third of the 18th century . Keßler is mentioned for the first time in 1704 in a negotiation protocol of the Stralsund carpenter's office.
According to Detlef Witt, Keßler was the "(...) artistically most important representative of this guild in the Hanseatic city on the Sund".
Works
His works, which were created between 1717 and 1727, include more than 200 full figures, a number of reliefs and ornamental sculptures, whereby Karl Möller accepts the collaboration of assistants due to the large number of works and the considerable differences in quality. Möller goes on to say that the altars by Landow and Reinberg were probably made exclusively by Kessler's assistants. The large number of orders also makes it impossible for every figure to be completely re-created; In some cases, a third time was worked on from the design, whereby the style development in the meantime had an impact, as for example with the resurrected by Reinberg and Sagard .
