The oldest parts of the Johanniskirche, the recessed rectangular choir and the north sacristy , date from the middle of the 13th century and stand over a plinth made of stone blocks . The east side of the choir has a round-arched group of three windows between two pointed arches. The walls of the windows are equipped with alternating layers of glazed stones. There is an arched frieze above the group of windows. The gable of the choir has four internally structured, ogival plaster panels. The walled-up priest gate in the south wall has a fivefold stepped cladding.

In the first half of the 15th century the three-aisled church with three bays , the west tower and the six-sided stair tower were built . The surrounding walls of the nave have buttresses . On the east gable there are decorative panels and a 17th century gable rider. There is a step portal on the north and south sides. The ribbed vault inside the church rests on octagonal pillars in the nave and on foliage consoles in the choir. The nave's vaults and pillars were renewed in 1883.

Works by Elias Keßler

The altarpiece has a strong architectural structure. The sculptural carved figures of the four evangelists from 1727 come from the Stralsund sculptor Elias Keßler , who also made the pulpit in 1728/29. This is carried by an angel and has a bulging basket with putti on leaf consoles. A dove on the sound cover symbolizes the Holy Spirit . In the back area is the biblical quote: “The word of our God remains forever.” Above an angel with the tablets of the law in the upper area is the risen Christ with the victory flag. The lectern (1727/28) on a volute base also comes from the workshop of Keßler .

Interior

The octagonal metal baptismal font, a zinc cast from the Moritz Geiß workshop (Berlin), is dated between 1860 and 1880. A triumphal cross group comes from the end of the 15th century. There is also a painting with a portrait of Johann Joachim Spalding in the church. The organ with a neo-Gothic prospect is probably an older work by Carl August Buchholz . It was installed by Grüneberg in 1832 . In 1986 it was restored.

On the left side of the sanctuary hangs a tapestry that the parish acquired in the 1970s and which presumably goes back to the Bauhaus student Else Mögelin . The carpet weave shows the Norns , the three Nordic goddesses of fate who determine the past, present and future of people. The pagan motif was reinterpreted in Christian terms with the additional remark “But Jesus ∞ is winner” (with an interposed variant of the Celtic infinity knot ) woven into the lower part of the picture. The assignment of the wall hanging to the work of the artist Else Mögelin is not considered certain.

tower

The 57 meter high tower has an octagonal, baroque tower dome covered with wooden shingles from the second half of the 17th century. The tower was renovated in 1992 and 1993. The bell consists of three bells in the tower and one bell in the gable. The oldest bell was cast by Joachim Metzger in Stralsund in 1731 . It had to be repaired in 1999. Two other bells, including another from Metzger from 1690, had been melted down in 1944. In 2001 the church received three new bells.
