Wizlaw I. (* 1180, † 1255 / 56 ) was a prince of the Principality of Rügen .

Life

Wizlaw was first mentioned in 1193. His parents were Prince Jaromar I and Hildegard of Denmark (* approx. 1135), the daughter of Knut V. Magnusson of Denmark (approx. 1128–1157) and (Sophie?) Sverkersdotter of Sweden.

In 1219 Wizlaw took part in a campaign by his liege lord, the Danish king Waldemar II, to Estonia . After the resignation of his brother Barnuta , Wizlaw I was mentioned in a document in 1221 as Prince of Rügen. This year, for the first time, German settlers are mentioned in the Rügen mainland holdings. In the following years he again took part in wars on the part of Waldemar II, so in 1225 in the Battle of Mölln and in 1227 in the Battle of Bornhöved . Despite the defeats of the Danes, he held on to the feudal relationship with Denmark. In 1231 he founded the Cistercian monastery Neuenkamp (today Franzburg ). He gave in 1234 Stralsund , the city charter and granted the city privileges such as fishing rights and duty-free. During his reign the Principality of Rügen reached its greatest extent.

progeny

With his wife Margarete (* before 1200; † March 5, 1232), probably a niece of Archbishop Absalon von Lund , he had six sons known by name:
