Jaromar II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaromar II (* around 1218 ; † August 20, 1260 ) was a prince of Rügen .

Life

On November 8th, 1231 Jaromars name was mentioned for the first time. From September 28, 1246 he became co-regent of his father, Prince Wizlaw I. In the first years of his reign he tried to achieve peaceful relations with Pomerania , especially with the Prince of Gützkow , vassals of the griffin dukes Barnim I and Wartislaw III. He promoted trade by abolishing the beach law and assuring Luebian merchant ships safe passage. After troops commissioned by the city of Lübeck destroyed the city of Stralsund in 1249 , a four-year privateer war on Lübeck ships was the result. All privileges previously granted to the people of Lübeck were canceled until they finally decided to pay compensation.

Jaromar II expanded the holdings of the Cistercian monasteries in Bergen , Neuenkamp and Hilda Monastery . In 1252 he donated the Land of Reddevitz (also: Radevice; the Mönchgut ) to the Hilda monastery near Greifswald . He promoted the settlement of monastic orders in Stralsund, such as the Dominicans , who founded the Katharinenkloster , and the Franciscans in the Johanniskloster, founded in 1254 . In 1255 he granted Barth and in 1258 Damgarten the town charter of Lübeck.

Jarmers Tårn in Copenhagen

In the inner Danish dispute between the Danish crown and the archbishops Jakob Erlandsen von Lund and Peder Bang von Roskilde , Jaromar II was a passionate supporter of the church. He landed with Peder Bang, who fled into exile in Rügen in Schaprode , in April 1259 on the main Danish island of Zealand . His army captured Copenhagen in May ; it probably also committed serious acts of violence. Most of Copenhagen is said to have burned down after looting. After the sudden death of King Christoffers in Ribe in May 1259, the king's widow Margarete Sambiria mobilized a Zeeland peasant army, which was defeated by Jaromar's troops at Næstved . After the devastation of Zealand, Skåne and Lolland , he landed with his troops on Bornholm and destroyed the royal fortress of Lilleborg there . On Bornholm or in Skåne , a woman stabbed him with a dagger in 1260 to seek revenge. His burial place is unknown - perhaps in the Bergen monastery on Rügen or Neuenkamp monastery in Franzburg .

The Jarmers Plads (Jaromarsplatz) and the Jarmers Tårn (Jaromarsturm) in Copenhagen still remind of the fights of that time .

progeny
